Hands up for hand-me-downs
Kellie Hush
May 31, 2007

Melbourne stylist Vanessa Coyle has been appointed senior fashion editor at British Harper's Bazaar. The 33-year-old, who was once half of the fashion label Sample, has worked as a freelance stylist in Europe for more than two years. Coyle says she instantly experienced the power of the international masthead; she has already visited the studio of John Galliano and has had "Givenchy return my calls immediately. I've done it tough over here for years so it's a great feeling to have doors opening." Another perk has to be the gifts fashion magazine editors famously receive from designers. "Who would not look forward to the gifts?" Coyle laughs. "I'm not going to reveal anything, but I can say I've had family and friends on the phone already asking for the hand-me-downs."

Coyle will fly the Australian flag but says some of our designers don't need the help. "Tina Kalivas is doing really well in London - I've been seeing her clothes on television and on celebrities. Her new summer collection is going to do really well over here so I've already called in a few pieces to shoot for Bazaar. Lover are also doing well here and are consistent designers."

If you haven't already chosen your winter wardrobe, Coyle has a few trend tips: "Look to Givenchy and Christopher Kane for military and nautical. Yes, both trends have been done to death, but Givenchy in particular was beautiful at the autumn-winter collections. Oversized is still very strong with supersized knits at Stella McCartney and Giles Deacon. The biker trend is also huge with studs and the quilted leather at Burberry. Also, 1940s glamour at Dior and Lanvin." And for bags and shoes? "My wardrobe tends to be full of YSL shoes and boots. I'm really anti the 'it' bag. Sick of it."

Over the summer there was the blogging debate on whether 'double denim' was a good look. Denim jackets were popular, and the fashion puzzle was whether you could pull one off with jeans. There is still no definite answer.
Throwing a new angle into the whole debate is the denim shoe. Harper’s Bazaar UK senior fashion editor, Vanessa Coyle, looked mind-blowingly fabulous in Manolo Blahnik for Christopher Kane boots with pale denim jeans. I NEED these boots!
