UK Vogue - Pete Doherty

VOGUE has long been respected as the ultimate fashion bible, setting trends a year before they hit the High Street.
Now it is about to go a step further — by thrusting crack and heroin addict PETE DOHERTY on their front page in a bid to cash in on his washed-out druggie look. I’ve mocked up this cheeky front cover of how Pete’s version could look as the glossy mag goes . . . well, rag.
I’ve dubbed my special edition “Rogue” magazine.

*** edit ***

I expect the Doherty cover to be just as controversial as size zero. Vogue has been at the centre of a storm for using anorexic-looking models to flog clothes, putting unrealistic ideas of beauty in young girls’ heads. The BABYSHAMBLES frontman spent Thursday in a studio in London’s Shepherd’s Bush doing a shoot with top photographer MARIO TESTINO. Pete and Mario were surrounded by a crew of 40 — stylists, make-up artists, lighting experts and lackeys. I personally think its disgusting that he is held up as an icon of beauty and cool — no matter how talented he is. ***edit*** A source said: “Vogue have teamed Pete up with one of the finest fashion photographers in the world for this shoot. “He is perfect material for the magazine, dating the most famous supermodel in the world and being an iconic pop star. It will be a best of British style shoot and he will only be in clothes by a UK company.” Kate was the centrepiece of Testino’s Portraits exhibition in 2004. She was also the cover star on the accompanying book. Their friendship played a part in the magazine’s decision to do the shoot. Last year Pete was due to release a song recorded with Kate called La Belle Et La Bete — roughly translated as Beauty And The Beast. The couple planned to release the song with copies of Vogue. Ironically, Pete recently signed a deal with Manchester fashion label Gio-Goi to give his name to a 2007 range — called “Drugs Free.”

^^If this is true i have to say i will be disguasted that Vogue would put someone like him on their cover. Why would he even be on the cover of a fashion magazine?Because his girflriend is Kate Moss?
There is nothing cool about Pete Doherty!!!

^Would have looked better if they hadn't messed up the cover with the numbers. That's US Vogue's trademark typography, with the numbers and all, and there is no way Anna Wintour is putting Pete on the cover, lol. Anyway, men rarely appear on Vogue covers...obviously, were he to do just that he would be accompanied by someone else....I think it's a good idea. From a style perspective they would be creating an avatar for the most talked about British style couple of 2004-2006. Might not be good for "the children" but it is highly relevant. But there is no mention of Pete on the cover, in this article, anyway.

I have to so strongly disagree.I dont think it would be a good idea even if he would be acompanied by Kate or any other model.
And i dont think they are the most tallked about style couple.Kate?Yes,he?I dont think so.He is interesting for one thing only and it sure isnt his style or his music!
And i shudder at the thought that you think its "highly relevant" that they would be on the cover?
And what is it so relevant about Pete even in a combiantion with Kate?
Sorry but i think it would be just wrong because glamouratisation of drug use and that kind of lifestyle is nothing to celebrate or be proud of!
Just my 2 cents!

A Jan. cover prob. benefits Angelina Jolie more than a March or September one, since she needs timely media exposure to get her new movie ready for award consideration. Jan. issues (as well as June/July issues, by the same logic) may be insignificant in fashion terms, but seeing how American fashion magazines have become the extended PR battlefield of actresses and singers, what are perceived as fashion's "cold months" may well be a coveted cover opportunity by Hollywood's standard. If one looks at when Hollywood rolls outs its moneymakers or Oscar baits, it's not hard to see why the cold/hot months in fashion and movies are not synchronized. March and September may be fashion's landmark months, but movie studios need to put actresses on a summer cover to promote a pricy flick. Moreover, November through Feburary are instrumental in momentum-building for an Oscar type of movie, so despite these months' lackluster retail performance, the covers are pretty significant.

If one can get past the fact that Hollywood commercialism has dominated US mainstream publications, I think the dis-synchronization can actually work out well for magazine sales. Publishing houses already know that they can count on March and September issues to sell well by themselves, and now they have known names to help them move copies in traditionally less fashion-oriented months.

A cover with Moss & Doherty, if it ever comes about, I don't feel that it would be that much different than Mick Jagger & Jerry Hall or any other music-fashion power couple down through the decades, because at the time, all these people surfed a wave of being better-known for their antics, rebellion and lively love lives than they were for their output. Looking back a few decades, we can see the worth of their output, but at the time, plenty of people were writing them off as a menace to society.

More mundanely, I'm wondering if there's a new issue of Elle Accessories due shortly, seeing as the magazine now comes out four times a year.
