Money gets lost at Russh magazine

WHEN Russh magazine launched its first issue three years ago, the local fashion industry was quick to predict its demise.

Now - despite growing circulation - threats of debt collectors and the resignation of key staff has again raised doubt about the glossy's future.
Confidential can reveal a leading Sydney model and artist agency have notified publisher Dr Ian Davies that an outstanding debt of $19,000 owed by the magazine has been referred to debt collectors.

The notice also reached media and leading designers, including Akira Isogawa and Alannah Hill, advising of the magazine's credit woes.
It follows the resignation last week of the magazine's creative director Trevor Stones and contributing features editor Catherine Caines, who are both believed to be owed wages.

Insiders claimed the magazine had been plagued by a poor payment history, "just as circulation was going gangbusters".

Dr Davies, who did not return Confidential's calls yesterday, split from Bruno Giagu, his original business partner on Russh , two issues after its launch in 2004.

In October, Davies syndicated the title, launching Russh Japan, the first Australian magazine venture to enter the market.

But local fashionistas alleged Davies' now Alexandria-based operation was fraying.

"He acts like the industry owes him but excuse the cliche you've got to pay the piper," one mag source snipped.

It is the best Aussie mag out there and I will be so hacked off if it folds.

I guess this is why reprints are wise.

Didn't Trevor leave a little while ago for Aus Vogue or Bazaar?

Hope it doesn't close... but unless they're brought out by a bigger publisher (which could ruin it) it might not last. Though if they're having money problems, a bigger publisher might not want to invest money in an ailing title.

What sad Friday news...
