I thought the same thing Gius, but then after pondering it a bit longer he created the hoax and has gained worldwide fame. Faker or not he's made a name for himself. So spending a bit of time on a fraud might have been worth it. Not honest or admirable, but definitely not a waste of time in the long run.

this whole thing just seems to be unbelievably egotistical...

first, he has painted his face on the globe, making the image of himself the biggest drawing in the world...

then, this whole thing turns out to be an elaborate host for him to gain fame and recognition?...

very, "look at me, look at me!" no matter how you spin it..

If he really wanted to be vain he could have rounded up thousands of Egyptians and created a large mound in his honour.

This is a job for Art Attack

You can't respect a guy like that, even if it was real it's not like he did anything extraordinary to contribute to the human race.

It appears he is not the first to explore GPS drawing.

However I guess I am a little surprised by the people who have commented saying he hasn't done anything for the human race/waste of money there are people starving. Could not these same statements be applied to any modern artist? Artists such as Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Dan Flavin, David Hockney, Claes Oldenburg, Sol Lewitt and Eva Hesse don't seem to be vilified for their wastage of money or lack of 'adding' to society. However I guess this calls into question the purpose of art, which is not really what this thread is about.

I apologise for appearing as very negative but it's not really art. Yes I undertand that people have different opinions of what defines art, and to confine it would be an oxymoron. However, some parts of this journey would have been quite frankly a waste of petrol. It's not like he left a literal mark on the floor that could be seen from space or anything. He created movent in a pattern except it's not even dance. There is nothing physical about the art, all you can see is the picture that's created afterwards, it's not as if people can put up that picture...or sell it, It can't really be admired except in thought. All art (as I understand it) is something physical that you can touch or see, this is just some mental art for us...so that we can imagine the journey and appreciate its concept. That's pretty much what a book does, it just creates a story for you to appreciate in your mind...you don't see the story.

My point is that the journey presented no actual art, you can't visit it...hell, you don't even know if he actually stuck to it like it says. An artist wastes some physical materials like perhaps paint and cloth, or brick and glass (for a building) but even then the building is usable, this guy wasted fuel that people are dying for, the most valuable resource the world has ever seen. In fact it's pretty pointless.

I'm sorry if I seem too negative, i'm just saying that he doesn't really deserve to be called an artist, it didn't add any cultural value. Graffitti artists like banksy are in concept a pest but it leaves a physical mark that can be enjoyed, and it's cultural.
Just my opinion on the matter
