Designer salaries

Ok, this might seem quite superficial, but even though I enjoy the fashion industry very much and don't expect only money coming out of it, I still think about how much does a designer like Pilati, Ghesquière or Bailey earn a month? And what about their high qualified staff?

The average designer from what I hear makes around 50K a year. Designers like Ghesquiere and such I imagine make millions. Just depends on how successful your designs are...

And whether or not you are an owner of your own company or merely employed ... I would think.

Average Earnings for Fashion Designers

Fashion design superstars may make hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, but what about the average designer? Entry-level fashion designer salaries are far from the million dollar mark, but, luckily, there is potential for growth.
Salary.com estimates that the middle 50 percent of US fashion designers with approximately 3 to 5 years of experience earn between $35,542 and $52,525.* As you move into more senior positions, you can expect your pay to increase.
A fashion design career takes perseverance and dedication. You will not likely achieve instant financial gratification. But if you love fashion, putting in your time in an entry-level position can pay off in the long run.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics:

http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos291.htm#earnings
Quote:
Fashion designers held about 20,000 jobs in 2006. About 28 percent of fashion designers worked for apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers; and the remainder worked for corporate offices involved in the management of companies and enterprises, clothing stores, performing arts companies, and specialized design services firms. Another 24 percent were self-employed.
Employment of fashion designers tends to be concentrated in regional fashion centers. In 2006, the highest concentrations of fashion designers were employed in New York and California.
Quote:
Median annual earnings for salaried fashion designers were $62,610 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $42,140 and $87,510. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $30,000, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $117,120. Median annual earnings of salaried fashion designers in the largest industries that employed them in May 2006 were:

Management of companies and enterprises: $70,570
Cut and sew apparel manufacturing: 69,810
Apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers: 62,910

Earnings in fashion design can vary widely based on the employer and years of experience. Starting salaries in fashion design tend to be very low until designers are established in the industry. Salaried fashion designers usually earn higher and more stable incomes than self-employed or freelance designers. However, a few of the most successful self-employed fashion designers may earn many times the salary of the highest paid salaried designers. Self-employed fashion designers must provide their own benefits and retirement.
Cannot find much about high end, salaried designers ... this is the closest I found. Nothing about those high end designers who work for themselves ... who own their own business. But I'd be willing to be the very successfull ones make way more than this .... with everything they usually dabble in.

it really depends... I read somewhere that when Tom Ford left Gucci/Yves St Laurent he got himself a 8-9 figure pay out.. but then again, I have a feeling he was on contract, and he was also creative director for gucci at least, and acting on the board.. that, and the fact they are massive companies..
