“For 10 years it was just Ben and me; we needed financial structure and help on the back end with production for the brand to grow,” explains Hayden-Harnett creative director and co-founder Toni Hacker. With their sights set on expansion, Hacker and co-founder Ben Harnett sold their Brooklyn-based handbag and accessories company to Accessory Headquarters. Hacker now spends the bulk of her time working out of Hayden-Harnett’s swanky new Manhattan showroom. She invited us over to check out the sun-drenched space and her killer new designs.
“I love our new space. It was time for our brand to grow and this just felt right. We’re really excited to be launching products in Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor and Anthropology for pre-fall. This new space makes it so much easier to have buyers come in and see our designs. Right now I'm wearing one of our Ramone Cuffs — I feel naked when I'm not wearing one! — and a necklace we're going to be launching soon. Each season, I try to include a statement piece that speaks to the collection.”
"I have a studio space at home that's the total opposite of my workspace here — it's clean and zen! But I love working from here. I have the space to spread out the leathers and really see what I'm working with."
“I design for myself, for my family and for my friends. I figure if there’s something not out there that I really want, others must want it, too. I also keep huge folders with tear sheets for inspiration; mainly I look at interior design because I’m so inspired by color and texture. This is my mood board.”
"These are our tech packs, which we send to our factories. At this point I've been doing this for so long that I'm pretty good at getting the samples to come out exactly how I want them without too much back and forth."
“This is where I keep a stash of go-to bags that I wear to and from the office, along with some leathers we’re considering working with. I also have some loose hardware I’m currently playing around with and some minaudière prototypes. I was playing around with them for awhile, but as of now, they’re not in the line.”
“I work on graphics, designing, marketing — pretty much everything from here. This is also where I keep some of my most treasured vintage pieces. That black bag in the front was the first piece I ever bought on my own. I was 9 or 10 and on my way to buy a doll with $11 I had saved up. On my way to the store, I stopped by a yard sale and saw this incredible bag; it was magical — I just had to have it. Even back then I recognized the beauty in a truly beautiful object.”
“This is a jungle leaf print we’re going to use next year. We’re also toying with the idea of using it for a silk caftan since we’re discussing going back into ready-to-wear, but the timing needs to be right.”
"I love the Aloha bag and it has done really well for us."
"These are some more of our slogan pieces. They're easy and fun. We're going to be introducing more of them."
"This is another one of our current top sellers in a new colorway for holiday. It fits a lot without being heavy. For a while everyone wanted big bags, but I think people are scaling down and simplifying things — plus there's so much freedom in a hands-free bag."
"The Ibiza Flight Tote was one of our first styles and it has been a consistent best-seller, so we are always introducing new colors. In fact, we've expanded the style and now have a full Voyager line of nylon essentials."
"These cuffs are staples. Every season we launch them in new colors. People have sent us the most incredible images of their collections...some of them have more than me! They literally have hundreds!"
“I try not to borrow too many bags from our showroom because for most of these, the ones you see are our only samples, so I need them to be in good shape — but sometimes it’s hard to resist! I love our crossbody styles. Camo has been doing well for us and we’ll be coming out with new variations. The front hinge pass through is also big for us and you’ll be seeing more of it...the hardware for it was inspired by a door hinge I found on Amazon! I’m also particularly excited for some quilted clutches we have coming out that will have these pass through details.”
"Perforated fabrics are huge right now and I think it's a trend that will continue into the fall."
“Our ethos has always been style and functionality. I want all of our pieces to be beautiful and tell a story, but ultimately they have to work for our customer’s daily life. This bag is a great reflection of that. Fringe has always been big for us and this bag is incredibly practical because it has two pockets; you can store your sunglasses in the side one so they don’t get scratched — scratched sunglasses are a big pet peeve of mine!”
