Carolina Herrera Fall 2011 Runway Review

Anyone that was disappointed by last season’s Asian-influenced collection from the queen of the pressed shirt surely has a smile on their face as Caroline Herrera went back to her roots for Fall 2011 with a collection filled with uptown sophistication. From the chic folded updos by Orlando Pita to the elegant, structured daywear with a hint of sparkle, Herrera certainly pleased the masses today.

The collection had two very distinct sections with sophisticated and structured daywear coming before a selection of Oscar-worthy evening dresses that ranged from dramatic gilt black to painterly iridescent prints. Menswear fabrics were expertly draped into urbane looks suitable for Herrera’s Upper East Side clientele and there was plenty of fur, a major trend for this season, with everything from jackets to collars adorned. The fur armed jacket we’ve seen so much of was perhaps best done by Herrera with the fur spiraling down the arms of the model.

Gloves were the standout accessory with some working well, such as the more subtle jeweled variety, but others, including ones with dramatic oversized cuffs. A standout look that we can safely call ‘The Carolina’ was a plum organza shirtdress worthy of the designer herself. While it is well known that the her clientele is older than the average fashion denizen Herrera’s niche is carved and she knows how to work within it.
