The master of the mysterious, Yohji Yamamoto, presented a haunting spring show at the close of Day 2 in Paris. Pale-faced models draped in his signature looks seemingly floated down the runway and heightened an already striking collection.

After the delighfully colorful autumn show, it was refreshing to see a return to his beloved black and white color palette as it suits his aesthetic all too well.

The styling was quite heavy for spring but the very light and delicate fabrics he used made it feasible. A great range was shown for each type of item:  variously altered jackets, paired with a wide span of different cuts of trousers – from short to long, from baggy to fitted - and not to mention beautiful dresses sprinkled throughout. There’s always a slightly unkempt vibe to his work that is effective by virtue of the fact that it never comes close to looking sloppy.

In terms of presentation, this collection hits a high note.  The models were not only rocking painfully cool sunglasses but also  fantastic belts. The hats also make a big statement -- their wavy shape seems to echo the hemline of a draped dress in motion.

There are few people who pull off daring techniques such as asymmetry with the same level of refinement of Mr. Yamamoto. This season’s offering just further proves his flair for depicting his vision of the more unusual side of beauty.
