Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2011

Christian Dior and Chanel have been staging over-the-top resort shows for the last few seasons, but it wasn’t until recently that full-on F/W and S/S-style presentations and runway shows were being held for Resort.

While Elle’s editor in chief Robbie Myers has expressed her dissatisfaction over this change because of its time-consuming nature, word is that the change comes at the request of Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Christina Binkley of the Wall Street Journal tweeted, “Wondered why ‘resort’ is a big runway show season this year. Just heard Anna Wintour asked for them.”

Although Resort may not merit an over-the-top presentation for brands that don’t have an innate resort-like aesthetic or a client base looking for jetsetter glam beach wear, for a label like Diane von Furstenberg, it makes perfect sense to stage a grand runway presentation.

The DVF girl is a jetset traveler by definition – hence the popularity of the versatile, wrap dress that helped turn the designer into the fashion icon she is today.

Black and white prints pervaded the show, as did a stripe motif (including the dress that the designer wore when taking her bow).  Both of these fit with the resort trend of nautical wear that we’ve been seeing so far.

Matching accessories, including hats, visors, and handbags, rounded out a collection of easy to pack, versatile garments that can be easily mixed and matched for on-the-go glam.
