Lacroix Creates Coins, and Other Designer Collaborations

Talk about multi-tasking mavens. Karl Lagerfeld guest edited the popular French newspaper, Liberation, for a day.

Thom Browne is expanding into women’s wear (it remains to be seen whether the collection will include shrunken blazers and cropped pants).

Christian Siriano is redesigning a cleaning sponge. O-Cel-O hired the Project Runway alum “to give the everyday scrub sponge a fierce makeover”.

Now comes word that couturier Christian Lacroix will be designing coins – yes, coins.

Lacroix is following in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld, who helped design special euro coins to celebrate Coco Chanel’s 125th birthday, back in 2008.

The iconic French designer was just named the Artistic Advisor of La Monnaie de Paris, the state-funded organization that oversees the designing and making of the French Euro coins, as well as the country’s various national medals.

It’s little surprise that the designer was chosen to contribute his talents by French officials. Despite his widely publicized financial troubles, he has remained an international icon, and the fashion world has been focused on what he would do next.

With his new title, Lacroix will design limited edition coins, the French gay marriage metal, the PACS, and the Marriage medal that couples get when they get married under French civil law (the French do love their metals).
