With green eyelids, fuchsia lips, and an ode to the bicycle and New York, how could Betsey Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection be anything less than fabulous?
Johnson’s show kicked off with a video, accompanied by the Queen song "Bicycle Race," showing Johnson and her family biking through the streets of New York, and around Lincoln Center.
The show proceeded into six mini collections. The line-up included a parade of brightly-colored flouncy dresses, navy-inspired fitted outfits complete with sailor hats and gold buttons, sexy biker shorts and bodysuits, floral maxis, and a handful of awesome dresses splashed with bright highlighter paint.
Johnson may have gotten some unwanted attention before Fashion Week, when word spread that Steve Madden Ltd. took up a $48.8 million loan her company had defaulted on, but it’s great to see the designer didn’t let that dampen her spirits.
And, if there’s any doubt about the 68-year-old designer’s eternal youth, just take a look at the dazzling "Ride Me" necklaces many of the models wore on the runway. If only more people in fashion had Betsey Johnson’s sense of humor!
