Cynthia Rowley Fall 2011 Runway Review

So far this season, the front rows haven’t been all too exciting. Sure, there are lots of celebrities, but most of them are of the B and C list kind (think Lo Bosworth), so it was refreshing to see Julia Stiles, Lauren Bush, and Alan Cumming among those that turned out for Cynthia Rowley’s Fall 2011 show (still, here’s to hoping Kanye West and Renee Zellweger will make appearances later on this week).  As for the Rowley show itself, it was heavy on the 70s inspiration with loose boho dresses, fabric ties around some of the models’ necks, geometric prints, glittering sweaters, and lots of flowy silhouettes making their way down the runway.

There was a welcome ease to the collection, which at times felt more Spring/Summer than Fall/Winter given the metallic sandals and cat-eye sunglasses that some of the breezier looks were styled with. The color palette, however, remained on the dark, moody, and rusty side with plenty of black, mustard yellow, gray, and dark blue.

While Rowley found success with her Op Art print skirts and flowing day dresses, not all of the designer’s 70s references hit the mark, with velvet dresses, velveteen suits, and baggy jumpsuits falling especially flat.
