For his namesake collection this season, Derek Lam was inspired by a woman who knows what she likes when it comes to fashion, “a definitive dresser,” and after his Fall 2011 show it’s pretty clear that many women will want Derek Lam in their closets – and lots of it.
Lam has made it clear this season that he can be counted on for a consistently classic, wearable, and elegant collection that has just the right amount of trend factor to keep it season-relevant for the modern working woman. Using semi-structured simple silhouettes, the designer showed a controlled collection of pebbled leathers, furs, jersey bodice dresses attached to wool felt skirts, and gorgeous billowy gowns that seemed to float down the catwalk. Lam’s talent lies in that he’s able to make clothes feel and appear to be weightless, while still keeping them Fall/Winter appropriate by removing unnecessary bulk.
Given the lightweight nature of many of the individual pieces, Lam’s collection played well into the layering trend we’ve been seeing this season, but in a more elegant manner than we've seen at many other shows thus far. Further, though cohesive in design, the designer offered plenty of prints, fabrics, and colors for his customers to choose from, all the while letting the luxury fabrics he opted to work with take center stage.
