It can be hard in today's culture to put sexy and classy in the same sentence, but those are the words that sprung to mind as I viewed the Monique Lhuillier Fall 2011 runway show. Today, several designers heralded a season of ladylike dressing. Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, and Lhuillier all showed a defined natural waist and, in the case of Lhuillier, super-slim-on-the-hips silhouettes that had a waft of 40s style to them.
Some trends that carried through on Lhuillier's runway include sheer blouses, done beautifully with silk and lace contrasting details, and adding a metallic thread to weightier fabrics like wool suits. And, as we've seen over and over, cigarette pants are going strong. When the designer did show trousers, the silhouette stayed hourglass and super sexy. A nod should also be made to the gorgeous ankle-wrap sandals and polka dot hosiery that delicately punctuated each look.
But the real focus on the runway of a designer known for her bridal designs is the gowns. And they didn't disappoint. Many of the pieces continued the theme of the cinched natural waist, while others offered a more sleek, or in one case, Grecian shape. Big and frothy, slim and sparkly, if we don't see at least one of these on a starlet this season I'll be very disappointed.
