Michael Kors Fall 2011 Runway Review

It’s hard to believe we are celebrating Michael Kors’ 30th year in fashion. Younger generations of downtown-dressers sometimes struggle to identify with Kors’ tailored sportswear, but what we must remember is that in 1981, when he launched his womenswear collection, he was the wunderkind of his time. Not to say he hasn’t had to work for it; the Kors empire nearly wasn’t when he was forced to file for bankruptcy protection in the early 90s, but with the help of LVMH, the Kors brand has become a recognizable staple of American fashion.

Kors has made a name for himself by consistently showing simple, wearable clothes that suit the needs of modern women. He has described his appeal as ‘pragmatic indulgence’ and that is exactly what he showed with his collection of seasonless, glamorous looks for Fall. The collection had references to his three decades of fashion and showed as a ‘best of’ featuring the classic Americana we have come to expect with a hint of nostalgia for older collections.

The collection, which featured menswear and womenswear, showcased classically chic and wearable garments. This isn’t to say the collection didn’t subscribe to the trends of the season; transparency, longer skirts, puffer jackets, and fur were ever-present so it would appear Kors still has his finger on the pulse of American fashion.
