eBay, CFDA, and 50 Top Designers Fight Fakes with Totes

“Fake fashions” have been making headlines for years. Most recently Tory Burch won $164 Million in a lawsuit against counterfeiters and The Wall Street Journal investigated fakes only to find that they’ve become so sophisticated in their designs and fabrications that even savvy shoppers sometimes buy fakes without being aware of it. Now 50 designers have banded together with eBay and the CFDA to take a stance against fakes.

A new campaign, YOU CAN’T FAKE FASHION, launches today to raise awareness against counterfeit goods and celebrate original design within the fashion industry. eBay and the CFDA collaborated with 50 of the biggest names in fashion for a collection of original canvas tote bags each of which bear the tagline YOU CAN’T FAKE FASHION in some form.

Often times collaborations of this nature lack originality, so it’s fantastic to see how effectively almost all of the designers worked in their signatures – Reed Krakoff’s design has a belt tie, Jason Wu’s has lace detailing, Betsey Johnson’s creation is an explosion of bubbly colors, 3.1 Philip Lim’s design is a nod to the designer’s KC Satchel, and perhaps the two best – Calvin Klein opted for a simple, understated clutch while Band of Outsiders topped their creation with bow ties.

CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Marchesa, Kenneth Cole, Rodarte and The Row are just some of the other boldface brands that contributed designs. Each of the designs, along with a limited-edition standard tote bearing the same YOU CAN’T FAKE FASHION tagline, will be available at fixed, ‘Buy It Now’ prices on eBay beginning on Monday, July 11 at 11AM EST/8AM PST. The customized totes will retail at $150.00 and the standard totes will go for $35 exclusively at eBay Fashion Vault.
