The Glossies: August 2011 Best and Worst Covers

Don’t let all the buzz surrounding the September glossies distract you because August 2011 has some noteworthy covers of its own. For one, fashion favorite Olivia Wilde ditches her red carpet glam looks for denim shorts by Genetic Denim on the cover of Nylon magazine in for their denim-themed issue. Also unexpected this month was Katie Holmes who wore a racy, lace black long-sleeve Lanvin dress, a leather hat, and dark nails for her Vogue Spain August cover.

Wilde went for a more sultry look for the August issue of Marie Claire where she opted for a brightly colored Calvin Klein Collection dress, while Katie Holmes also made it onto another popular glossy, InStyle (not enough actresses in Hollywood, ay?) Ironically, Holmes opted for Lanvin here as well, but in a testament to how versatile of a designer Alber Elbaz is, she looks homey on one cover and S&M on the other.

Sarah Jessica Parker, once again, made it on the cover of Vogue, this time for their annual Age Issue. There was much debate over this cover, but I’d consider it a winner for the sheer fact that she’s wearing such a gorgeous Burberry coat. For a fantastic close-up shot, however, pick up the latest issue of Allure featuring a glowing Jessica Alba.

Because it’s summer, one has to mention Hamptons magazine, though they’ve had a few notable covers (it’s a weekly over the summer), the most notable featured Emmanuelle Chriqui – one of Hollywood’s most underused actresses – and Andre Balazs, the famed hotelier who is not only cool enough to be the mastermind behind the Standard Hotel and the Chateau Marmont, but dating Chelsea Handler.

Mila Kunis looks playfully adorable sipping an iced coffee in a sweater-topped black bikini on the cover of GQ, but hands down the best cover of the month belonged to Tilda Swinton who opted for a Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo jacket and silk blouse and a pale-pale face for her W magazine cover.

Less appealing is the close-up of Pippa Middleton‘s face surrounded by flowers, which made the cover of Tatler’s August issue. Is it me or would this be more appropriate were it a post-mortem eulogy? Lindsay Lohan, who is rumored to be Vanity Fair’s September cover star, appeared on the cover of Italian Vanity Fair’s latest issue. The photoshoot took place in the actress’ Venice home since she was still under house arrest at the time – someone needs to get her into Oscar Blandi pronto for a hair color change.

Harper’s Bazaar featured Anne Hathaway on their cover this month and while there’s nothing inherently wrong with it, the Christmas-y red seems a little bit overkill for August. Similarly, Heidi Klum appears on this month’s cover of Glamour looking perfectly fine, but given how naturally beautiful she is, it’s a shame the magazine resorted to so much Photoshop when she clearly does not need it (plenty of recent pics to prove it!)
