Prada Spring 2012 Runway Review

In a testament of the extent to which Prada designer Miuccia Prada has the fashion industry wrapped around her talented little fingers, her playfully kooky prints have covered the bodies of nearly every powerful fashion industry player – not least of which is Anna Wintour who has proudly worn a number of Prada's prints including a banana print skirt. If you can get Wintour to wear a banana print skirt, you’re clearly onto something. Following suit, Prada went with another print to literally reflect her inspiration this season: a car print. In fact, cars made their way onto everything from oversized clutches and boxy day bags to dresses and the inspiration translated into a flame motif that similarly recurred on both ready-to-wear and accessories, most notably shoes.

Prada’s talent lies in that she can take an inspiration point as kitschy as cars – or in past seasons monkeys and bananas – and through pairings with retro feminine silhouettes, her prints appear sophisticated and grown-up, but in a lighthearted and easily approachable way.

Without a doubt, the flame-accented shoes will be the “it” shoes come Spring 2012 and what handbag-collecting woman wouldn’t want a clutch emblazoned with imagery of retro cars? When it came to the ready-to-wear, aside from the pleated skirts which Prada has long mastered, the big standouts this season were the series of leotards that I have a feeling Beyonce is just itching to wear post baby.
