Herve Leger Fall 2012 Runway Review

This season’s Herve Leger collection was inspired by “seduction and restraint.” Restraint isn’t necessarily what comes to mind when one sees ostentatious fur (often on sleeves a la Fall 2012 BCBG, also designed by Max Azria), knee-high gladiator boots, bondage-like wide belts, leather harness detailing, endless glimmering accents, cut-outs, fringe sleeves, gold hardware against black leather, and armor-like dresses. Perhaps Max Azria was referring to the carb restraint those hoping to squeeze into his curve hugging collection will have to exhibit.

Though the collection will be far form easy for the average woman to pull off – let’s be honest here, how many of us look good in a leather harness? – there wasn’t the expected bandage dress parade. Curve hugging dresses were often finished with pleats or fringe rife with swaying movement and there were even some skinny trousers, a slinky floor-sweeping pleated gown, and long sleeves in the mix. Nearly every look had some nod to equestrian-inspired harnesses (it’s worth noting that harness-like details were prominently featured on the Fall 2011 Leger runway), making for a mostly Lara Croft-appropriate collection – or at least a collection perfect for someone with the build and confidence of Angelina Jolie.
