There were a number of high notes in this season’s Valentino collection, notably the butter soft leather pieces that opened the collection and the recurring couture-worthy embroidery. That said, there’s an underlining dowdiness to much of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli's work that seems to pop up season after season. Perhaps they’re too literally inspired by the past as was the case with Victorian era long sleeve dresses, cape coats, carpet-inspired coats, and military-inspired monochrome outerwear, none of which were helped by the demure silhouettes that ran throughout the collection.
