Runway News

Apart from the four main fashion meccas, numerous cities around the world hold their own fashion weeks. Lately, these cities have been gaining more and more press attention. Think of Sao Paolo, Berlin and Madrid. Currently, Amsterdam International Fashion Week is in full swing with five days of Holland’s biggest fashion talents showing their S/S 09 collections in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek.

On Monday, Dutch designer of the moment, Jan Taminau was the first designer to showcase his newest collection. Taminiau has been trying to land his name in Paris lately, showing his romantic and feminine creations during the haute couture fashion week. But in Holland, his name has been on everyone’s lips for quite some time. Be sure to expect dreamy gowns and exquisite techniques on his runway.

On Tuesday, the highlight of the day was without doubt the Lichting 2008 show. Loosely translated as The Class Of 2008, this show featured the best looks of aspiring designers that graduated from Holland’s most prestigious fashion academies this year. Students from the Willem de Kooning Academie Rotterdam and the Arnhem Fashion Institute presented their talents to the press, who is searching for the next Viktor & Rolf.
Monique Collignon will present her collection on Fridaynight. Collignon is known for her sexy yet chic couture collections. Her refined cut and knowledge of what women really want make her show the hot ticket of the day.

On Saturday, the denim label Blue Blood will treat the young and the hip with trendy streetwear. The young label has drawn attention of press and shoppers since they first showed only a few seasons ago in Amsterdam. Right now, this show is a must see for every fashion enthusiast visiting the city. With a store in Holland’s very own Avenue Montaigne – the P.C. Hooftstraat in Amsterdam – Blue Blood has been rising quickly as a major Dutch denim label.

Sunday, the last day of the fashion week, will be the day of Django Steenbakker. The first winner of Dutch Project Catwalk will be showing for the second time in Amsterdam since his victory last Fall. Already a popular name in the media, he pleased the crowds of last season with his first show. He showed clothes that were both fit for young trendsetters as well as for the mature and sophisticated woman. Hopefully his buzz will remain strong after this week.
