SONIA RYKIEL RETROSPECTIVE

When I was in Paris for 2009 Spring/Summer Fashion Week, all the talk was about Sonia Rykiel’s 40th anniversary show.

As popular as the designer may be state-side nothing compares to how much the Parisians love her work.

So, it’s only fitting that there will be a retrospective of her work in Paris’ Les Arts Décoratifs beginning on November 19th and running for the following five months.

The exhibit will have about 200 looks and WWD, who spoke with the exhibit organizer, Olivier Saillard, noted that the retrospective underscores the manner in which Rykiel crafted one of fashion’s most readily identifiable signatures and how  the designer has influenced subsequent designers.

Saillard is quoted as saying “Rykiel did minimalism before the Japanese and turned clothes inside out before the Belgians.”
