MILAN: MISSONI F/W 09

By: Stephanie Micci

In these uncertain times, there has been a common theme amongst the Fall/Winter ’09 collections for the creative directors to return to familiar territory, really focusing their collections on what differentiates their brand from others, in essence, returning to those signature items that are synonymous with their name.  For Missoni that namesake item is colorful knitwear.

Throughout the years Missoni has been in business, it has never strayed far from its knitwear heritage, yet this season they put extra emphasis on the items that won them international fashion recognition – knitwear in all colors, shapes and sizes. The first look was a knit wear explosion including no less than a mohair scarf, a miniskirt worn over a slipdress, a hooded scarf, legwarmers, and fingerless hand warmers topped off with a waistcoat and menswear inspired jacket – a true knitwear layer cake.

Later looks made a statement with delicate spider web-like slip layer for extra texture (not necessarily needed).  Layering, as much as knitwear, was the overwhelming message these hippie-downtown looks exhibited as they sauntered down the runway in a kaleidoscope of colors such as soft pinks, pastel peach, blue-greens, buttercup yellows, and grays punched up with a cerulean blue and gold lamé.
