GENERAL IDEA

After ten years of showing his collections during Seoul Fashion Week, designer Bumsuk Choi made his runway debut in New York City during New York Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter 2009 season. Though he has had no formal training, Bumsuk Choi is the designer behind the burgeoning menswear label, General Idea. The label was launched in the Spring of 2004 when Choi was only 26. At the time of the launch, Bumsuk was the youngest designer to join the Seoul Collection in the Republic of Korea.

Since the start of General Idea, Bumsuk has done multiple collaborations in various industries. He has designed the Mild Seven RENAUIT F1 Team’s Formula 1 Race Car, designed the packaging and uniforms for Heineken (to be distributed throughout Korea), and designed the Absolut Vodka bottle for their 2007 campaign.

For Fall/Winter 2009, Bumsuk Choi focused on highly tailored jackets and coats in geometric shapes and constructions. Bumsuk’s continuing color palette of black and gray are broken up with unexpected pops of bright color and metallic details. The line also includes quirky shirting, oversized knits, playful pants, cozy scarves, belts, angular necklaces, and even patent leather hightops.

The General Idea collection has already been picked-up by trendsetting stores including Takashimaya, Oak, and Atrium and in late 2009, Puma will release a limited edition General Idea collection for their Black Station Line, which will go on sale in Asia.
