CARLOS FALCHI FOR TARGET

I met Carlos Falchi on April 23rd of this year, when the talented Brazilian handbag and accessories designer was celebrating 30 years of his work at Bergdorf Goodman with a retrospective exhibition.

On display were gorgeous, intricately crafted bags dating back to the 70’s, along with 10 one-of-a-kind bags that Falshi designed to commemorate the special occasion. Five of the limited edition handbags were inspired by styles from his archives, and five were inspired by New York City. Seeing the bags up close was a true delight. Flachi works mostly with exotics, and the skins he uses are remarkable – huge scales and you don’t see any seams.  Now comes the exciting news that Target has partnered with Falchi to launch a limited-edition handbag collection, Carlos Falchi for Target.

There will be 13 items in the Target collection, and though the prices have yet to be revealed, they promise to be a small fraction of the prices of the originals, which can go for upwards of $25,000.

This collection is the eighth handbag launch in a series of limited-time-only accessories designers at Target. I hope that just like for his commemorative collection for Bergdorf Goodman, the designer will turn to some his signature style as the inspiration for his collection. For now, all we know is that the line will feature faux snakeskin handbags in plum and teal with contrasting shades of brown, black, and gray, while other style will feature Falchi’s patchwork, which he is famous for.  I’m still crossing my fingers that he’ll do a take on his fringe bag and hand clutch!

Among the designer brands that have collaborated with Target on limited edition handbags in the past are Felix Ray, Hayden-Harnett, Anya Hindmarch, Devi Kroell and Botkier. The Carlos Falchi for Target collection will be available at most Target stores and at Target.com November 1st through December 27th. 2009.
