ERIN WASSON: FROM MUSE TO THE TENTS

Less than two years ago, Erin Wasson was the muse and stylist to her now-fellow designer, Alexander Wang.  In the same vein that Victoria Beckham was inspired by Roland Mouret – a designer she publicly favored before branching out to design her own line of dresses, Wasson’s design aesthetic was inspired by Wang. But unlike Wang, Wasson will not be showing at Milk Studios this season, much to the surprise of many in the industry (Wasson showed her debut RVCA line in a walk-up building on the Lower East Side in NYC, and last season she showed at Milk Studios). The edgy, bohemian-style model turned designer seemed like a shoe-in for the cool, downtown Milk Studios again, but come September 11th, the fledgling designer will debut Erin Wasson x RVCA at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tents in front of a crowd of no less than 1,100 (more than double Wang’s audience).

Erin Wasson x RVCA is a collaboration between Wasson and Costa Mesa, California-based skate and surf brand RVCA, and has been sold by influential retailers including Opening Ceremony in NYC, Selfridges in London, and Colette in Paris. In a press release, the model said that she is “humbled and honored” to be showing in the tents where she has “spent hours” as a model “working with some of the icons of American fashion,” adding “meanwhile, I’ve only been doing this design thing for a few seasons. Spring ’10 is season three, and it’s kind of insane to think that I’m getting to show on that same stage. I am incredibly grateful to IMG, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Maybelline New York for giving me the opportunity.”

Surprising choices aside, I’m certainly looking forward to what Wasson brings to the table this year, especially given the fact that she seems to be making the most of the venue – she is planning a multi-media installation and and a live musical performance on the catwalk.
