HAYDEN HARNETT S/S 2010

The stand-outs this season were Hayden-Harnett’s artfully crafted dresses which offered modern twists to classic silhouettes. Of particular note, a strapless number that came in grenadine as well as in blue and featured understated side pleating and a gorgeous zipper. A white dress with a back panel cut-out was similarly eye-catching. There was a nice mix of loose fitting silhouettes along with more body-conscious ones, and while there were plenty of modern techniques and details on display, as is usually the case with Hayden Harnett’s collections, there was a distinctive vintage feel to almost every piece in the collection. You always get the feeling that there is a story and a history behind each one of their pieces.

The vintage theme translated into accessories as well via high-waisted bikini bottoms, ruffle accents, and a weathered look to some of the leather used for the handbags. As usual Hayden-Harnett hits a home run with their accessories – each bracelet is more covetable than the next and they’re one of the few brands who have managed to design high-quality, original handbags in the mid to high three-digit price range. The lava theme came through distinctly in a number of them, particularly a clutch with red v-like details that had the appearance of lave flowing down coal, a design that was mirrored in one of the cuffs.

The Spring/Summer 2010 line was shown at the Gabarron Foundation with the Opera Company of Brooklyn performing in the background underscoring the label’s heritage. Based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn the founders of Hayden Harnett – Toni Hacker and Ben Harnett – always make it a point to support their community. In fact even the model’s hair in the show was done by Nackie Karcher, owner and head stylist of Parlour Salon in Brooklyn (along with Davines).
