When the likes of Fendi, Maison Martin Margiela, and Zaha Hadid are involved in a project, you know it’s got to result in something great. So it comes as little surprise that I was completely taken aback on my tour of the Limited Edition Experiences (held at the same time as Design Miami and Art Basel), a program that brings together some of the world’s most innovative fashion houses to create retail experiences of unique inventiveness for a limited amount of time.
The experiences include a multi-brand store called the “F Factory” (F for fashion), anchored by Fendi, a separate space where Cynthia Rowley has turned an old DHL truck into a boutique surrounded by an indoor “pleasure garden” where you can swing on swings, sit on faux grass, and even roll down a man-made hill, and yet another space where Duncan Quinn has created his own townhouse complete with an indoor croquet course.
The townhouse features the designer’s ready to wear store, with numerous special editions pieces created especially for the pop-up, along with a bespoke sale for handmade suits and shirts. As for the F Factory, Fendi has expert craftsmen from Rome on hand to personalize and customize some of their handbags, and world renowned graffiti artist Andre who is creating three needle point panels live. The panels will then be stitched by selected students from the DASH school and transformed into a unique Fendi handbag, and for those into the DIY, Fendi will also be selling DIY Fendi baguette bags.
Other participating F Factory designers include Katherine Fleming, Maia N, Neon Monster, Stubbs & Wootton, Marni, and Touche Muah. In addition, Gucci is launching the second installment of Icon-Temporary, a flash sneaker store.
With 18 high-end pop-up shops offering unique and collectable items, there is little doubt that the Design District where the shops are located will be one of the hottest spots during the early part of December.
