Backstage Diaries: New York Fashion Week with Wilhelmina’s Damien Neva

MONDAY, SEPT. 9 — After the weekend blitz of half a dozen shows, Monday proved merciful with a solo offering of Tim Coppens at MILK Studios. I was gladdened to learn that Alexander Ferrario and Dachuan (below) would feature, as this casting would afford me the opportunity to see the celebrated designer’s work firsthand. After all, Barneys does not accidentally purchase just any designer’s inaugural collection.

The collection took inspiration from motorcycle sport. Stylist Tom Van Dorpe assembled looks with plenty of vim and voom, even going the length to send chic motorcycle helmets down the runway in the hands of models. Masterful touch that.

I captured Alex Ferrario on video during line up. Classic Alex, clowning a bit, pulling faces, all the while quietly holding court. When the woman organizing the line confessed she didn’t know Alex’s surname, it was the other models in the Argentinian’s orbit who can be heard saying his surname. That right there is charisma epitomized. New York surely has to have fallen in love with Alexander Ferrario and if not, then watch the videos I have shot of him dating back to June in Milano.
