Sonia Rykiel Spring 2014: Getting Closer to Rykiel’s DNA

It has been hard to recapture the quirkiness that was Sonia Rykiel‘s signature back when the designer was still at the helm of the brand, but this season, Geraldo da Conceição gave a strong showing — though like last season, it could have used some editing.

With wide pants cut just above the ankle, oversized plaid, reworked golfer-inspired checks, diamond shapes accenting striped separates, loose-fitting knit tops and long pleated skirts, there were many of the brand’s signatures, all of which had high wearable appeal. That said, it was an improvement from last season, though the collection still seemed to lack the coquettish Parisian charm it once had. Perhaps next season the designer will give us some tongue-in-cheek embellishments or emblazoned tops?
