Valentino Spring 2014: A Nod to the Opera

Inspired by the Rome Opera, Spring 2014’s Valentino collection showed off Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s affinity for romance, traditional almost clergy-like dress and opulent couture surface embellishments. Mixed in were tribal, bohemian and folklore elements — think colorful diamond motifs, long tails on coats, high necks, long sleeves on dresses and fringed handbags.

Like most of the duo’s past Valentino collections, silhouettes were conservative with the exception of a few high-waist shorts, but the bolder color and print choices this season helped balance out the austerity of the silhouettes.
