Reed Krakoff Paints a Bold Collage for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Look: Krakoff does collage — mishmashes of textures and colors, wayward seams along with cut-and-paste silhouettes. These stylings feel like a more bold direction than Krakoff’s previous works. It’s always been refined (with a little upscale quirk thrown in for good measure), but it’s pushed closer to the limit this season. Think plush lavender-colored raglan sweaters with a fur insert and slight leather piping as well as wrap skirts either made of snake or in a print mimicking its patterns. It doesn’t always work, but it does more often than not, so that’s a plus. Also of note are a variety of Yves Klein blue garments that simply pop off the runway, even given their focus on monochrome collaging (whereas the others pull in other hues).

The Accessories: Krakoff’s a master in bag design, so you know there were plenty of fawn-worthy ones; bucket-esque bags with straps and hardware that resemble belts. Also, cool architectural cuff bracelets and heels that are business in front, party (aka brightly colored fur) in the back.

The Beauty: The “no makeup” makeup look.

The Takeaway: We’re just really glad the designer does ready-to-wear now.
