Ottawa’s the new New York, right? Sure it may not have the same domineering skyline, but both cities are, in some way, a seat of power and each recently held their respective Fashion Weeks. Ottawa concluded its Fall 2014 shows a few days ago, but in case you missed it, here are the highlights from several young and seasoned Canadian designers.
Prophetik
Design label Prophetik, from Jeff Garner, featured its latest Dreamer’s Cure clothing collection and a line of leather accessories on the opening day. Taking inspiration from the dressmakers of the Civil War period who worked with what was in front of them — fashioning beautiful gowns that were later taken apart to recreate new dresses — sustainability born out of necessity was the theme as the label exhibited its metal embellished dresses, antique silk made outfits, jodhpur pants and neoprene bustiers.
Zarucci
Fashion brand Zarucci’s young designer Nora Zabarah Pucci presented her second-ever show of formal wear (above). Filled with red carpet statement gowns and jumpsuits, fabric was draped and wrapped to accentuate feminine curves. Fine hand and machine embroidery left the impression of body tattoos as nude-lined separates were decorated with vines, flowers and bare winter trees.
Anna Klatt
Kawartha Lake-based designer Alanna Klatt, influenced by her own Christian beliefs, opted for a sombre focus on simple blacks, browns and grays for her Genesis collection. Pared down to just knits and jerseys, the looks spoke to everyday workability as understated yet functional.
Elena Hinke
Siberian-born designer Elena Hinke was given just two weeks to prepare and create everything for her show. The result? Far from a rushed affair as regal gowns skimmed the floor in shades of black and cream. Lace and satin designs were encrusted with jeweled bustiers, while the occasional elbow length glove gave the collection an operatic feel — helped also by Canadian opera singer Sharleen Joynt showcasing one ensemble.
Joseph Ribkoff
Finally, established Montreal designer Joseph Ribkoff — who proudly continues to manufacture in Canada — went big and bold with red smatterings of floral splashed within minimalist lines. The slim-cut collection showcased day-to-evening ensembles with sexy black mesh backs and thigh-skimming mini skirts.
