No better way to start off the New Year than with a prestigious award, and that’s just how some of the most promising up-and-coming designers did. Italian winemaker Ecco Domani has announced the winners of their 2010 Fashion Foundation awards which give designers $25,000 each to put toward their fall presentations during New York Fashion Week in February. So who are those getting the financial boost? In the women’s design category, Prabal Gurung, Joseph Altuzarra of Altuzarra, Ross Menuez of Salvor Projects, and Phillipe Rollano and David Trujillo of The Blonds are bringing home the grant, while the men’s design winner is Siki Im, accessories went to Irini Arakas of Prova, and John Patrick of Organic won the grant for sustainable design.
The seven winners were chosen from a poll of 175, each of which were judged by major players in fashion including Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus’ senior vice president and fashion director, Barneys New York’s vice president of fashion merchandising Julie Gilhart, Vogue’s fashion news/features director Sally Singer, and Barneys’ vice president, and men’s divisional merchandise manager Jay Bell.
The winters will also this year be participating in a group show at Bryant Park during Fashion Week that is slated for February 15. The runway show will be included in a Lifetime documentary about the foundation and the winners which will air in March.
