Maison Martin Margiela Plays It Safe for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Scene: Kanye West, who just wrapped a tour in which he spent a good portion of the show hidden behind a Maison Martin Margiela mask, sat front row.

The Look: It was a surprisingly straight-laced season for the fashion house. Silhouettes were relaxed in style and drape, making for a casual lineup that included lingerie-inspired dresses, straight-leg trousers, Cosby-style knits, pinafore dresses along with plenty of herringbone and plaid tops as well as dresses cinched at the waist. The most envelope-pushing looks appeared as though they were two garments morphed into one (a top that looked like the bottom was fashioned out of the bottom half of a blazer, for example). It wasn’t a particularly exciting collection and a good chunk read as dowdy with its loose silhouettes and brown herringbone fabrics.

The Accessories: Over-the-knee boots, the brand’s signature sliced-front shoes and rectangular-shaped bags.

The Beauty: Surprisingly, both hair and makeup were very understated — no elaborate face masks this season.

The Takeaway: Unfortunately, this season lacked edge and it didn’t have particularly fashionable looks to make up for it.
