Sonia Rykiel’s Softly Sophisticated Fall 2014 Collection (Runway Review)

The Scene: Waiters carried trays of champagne and tricolored cocktails lined the staircase up to the runway room. Instagram revealed pre-show masseuses were also on-hand.

The Look: It was really refreshing and very Parisian to finally see a collection that didn’t seem to care much for trendy, statement-making silhouettes. If Artistic Director Geraldo da Conceicao‘s slouchy sweaters and slim shoulders made any statement it was “relax.” Well, a couple of sweaters said “Moi,” but who else is all that relaxation for if not yourself? The camel and white color story at the beginning of the presentation also served as a sort of palette cleanser for some of the louder collections we’ve been bombarded with this season. Rykiel’s workwear looked like actual workwear. One trend Conceicao did buy into was the exaggerated layering with peplums inexplicably providing the bottom layer for almost every designer’s crop top combinations. But anyone who can create a loose-fitting yet body-hugging pencil skirt that actually flatters is allowed to throw a few curveballs. One of the bigger statements (literally) was yak-hair coats, which were some of the few pieces to overwhelm the models’ bodies. Draped and darted knit peekaboo dresses in sherbet hues gave a lot of day-to-evening options.

The Accessories: Open-toed shoes for winter always feel like a misstep, and the gargantuan platforms took away from the elegance of the clothes.

The Beauty: There is nothing left to say about a center part.

The Casting: Miranda Kerr, Jessica Hart and Irina Kravchenko.

The Takeaway: Everything about this collection just seemed so soft and cozy. It’s nice to see a collection you want to curl up in instead of analyze.
