One Minute with … Kate Spade Chief Creative Officer Deborah Lloyd

Athletically-influenced, this season’s relaxed Kate Spade silhouettes were shown in a grass-covered West Chelsea space. Bags were quirky, prints were fun and colors were upbeat. We spoke with Chief Creative Officer Deborah Lloyd to find out more about her guilty snacking pleasures, if she’s ever at a loss for ideas and more.

theFashionSpot: What are you going to do as soon as the presentation is over?

Deborah Lloyd: I’m escaping the ordinary and heading upstate!

tFS: So, we guess that means NYFW is all about Kate Spade for you?

DL: I do love Kate Spade! But you know, it’s so easy to follow the other shows online — you can take everything in no matter where you are. Actually, I like it better this way. I can be home, take everything in at my own pace and see things a lot better than I would if I were at the actual shows.

tFS: Can you talk a little bit about your inspiration this season?

DL: I love designing for spring; the freshness, that feeling of taking chances, of feeling like anything is possible, it’s all very exciting. You can see this translating into the prints — you can really smell the spring with the ocean and floral-inspired looks, and the coordinating animal-shaped bags and accessories.

tFS: You always come up with so many quirky pieces. Do you ever find yourself stumped for ideas?

DL: We always have a lot of big ideas at Kate Spade! Every month, we pick some to expand on. I have an amazing team, so hopefully the ideas keep coming.

tFS: Are you involved in the Kate Spade skincare that will be launching in the next few months?

DL: I’m involved in everything.

tFS: Can you tell us anything about it? Was it tested on the models?

DL: My lips are sealed!

tFS: When you’re in the trenches working on the collection, what’s your go-to snack?

DL: It tends to be something British — usually some naughty chocolate with tea.

tFS: What’s your go-to guilty pleasure when you’re procrastinating?

DL: I don’t procrastinate much, actually.

tFS: Any memorable NYFW disasters?

DL: I’m just happy when there’s no hurricane or snowstorm!
