If you thought there was but one way to wear a button-up shirt, you would be mistaken. The iconic staple was the inspiration for Steven Alan’s 20th anniversary collection. Known for his tops (everyone wears them, everyone), Alan decided to delve into his archive in honor of the big 2-0.
“Well, it was all about the shirt. It’s our 20th anniversary and so we looked back into our archives for inspiration,“ he told us at his presentation. “And then we pulled the shirts and worked with chiffon and wax to create that crinkle effect.”
The resulting collection was a surprisingly varied array of cotton suits, jackets, dresses and, yes, shirts that had a very relaxed and effortless quality to them. Or, a very Steven Alan feel to them. The accessories were minimal, the hair long and loose, and a slick of lip crayon (Burt’s Bees — we asked).
Alan’s favorite item of the collection, incidentally, is the slightly padded jacket. “You can wear it anywhere and ball it up and toss it in your bag.” Though the crinkled dress was a close second. We’d have to agree.
