21 Questions with TOMS’ Heather Mycoskie

‘Tis the season for giving, and we think the best gifts are the ones that do more than sit under a tree. Our December guest editor, Heather Mycoskie, the better half of Blake Mycoskie (and that’s saying A LOT! He’s pretty spectacular), happens to agree. TOMS, which recently launched its Target collab, has become the go-to for giving for many of us. Heather oversees TOMS’ Animal Initiative program, which partners with animal-focused organizations to raise funds and awareness. Heather’s just launched her second collab in partnership with the Clinton Foundation and the Wildlife Conservation Society to protect African elephants.

So, who better to speak to about giving this holiday season?

  1. When I get dressed in the morning I think… well, right now I think of which of my clothes still fit and will be most comfortable! (I’m pregnant!)
  2. The one item of clothing I could never live without is… I actually collect vintage Mexican dresses — I must have every color in all sorts of lengths and different embroidery.
  3. My current favorite piece to wear is… my TOMS Yvette Polarized Sunglasses. They have traveled with me on all our trips for the TOMS Animal Initiative.
  4. Every woman’s wardrobe should include… a go-to pair of jeans that always make you feel amazing. My favorites are from Mother Denim.
  5. If you looked at my phone you’d see… my home screen picture, which is my “papa” grandfather and I dancing to “Landslide” at our wedding. (He recently passed; he along with my dad walked me down the aisle to marry Blake.)
  6. My beauty essentials include… for skincare, I love a mix of Tata Harper and REN products.
  7. The last thing I googled was… best ways to naturally induce labor.
  8. If my days had one extra hour I’d… spend more time with our friends and family. Blake and I have such crazy schedules that it can be hard to get everyone together.
  9. My guilty pleasure is… going to Disneyland.
  10. I’m dying to splurge on… a new coat from Isabel Marant. She’s one of my favorite designers; I can’t get enough of her pieces.
  11. On a typical Saturday night, I… love to craft, especially making dream catchers. Since we travel so often sometimes, it’s nice to have a quiet night at home.
  12. I’m most excited for the holidays because… we recently moved into a new home this fall, so I am excited to make our first set of holiday memories there. And most importantly, our first child is due any minute now, so I’m beyond excited for that!
  13. When I’m stressed I… like to spend time in nature. Anywhere there is fresh air, nature and wildflowers is calming for me.
  14. When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle… I always try to do yoga and workout with my trainer at least three or four times a week.
  15. My biggest holiday pet peeve is… when people only think about receiving gifts. The holidays should really be about being thankful for what you have and giving back in whatever ways you can.
  16. My one style regret is… piercing my tongue, not once, but twice.
  17. When it comes to picking out the perfect gift… it’s important to support companies that you believe in. TOMS and many other amazing companies make social consciousness central to their mission and those are the brands I like to support. People receiving your gifts are always happy to hear their present also helped someone in need.
  18. My fashion and style inspiration for the holidays is… this holiday I am all about cozy, soft and easy access to feed our newborn, while still incorporating my favorite pieces from our travels or from my vintage collection.
  19. My favorite way to give back is… first, just by being kind and taking the time to reach out to those around you everyday who need a hand or hug. And now with so many different products which have purpose built into their business, supporting companies whose values you believe in and who are working to make the world a better place.
  20. The best way to get involved is… find what you are passionate about and learn how you can help. I’ve always loved animals and realized that through TOMS, I had an amazing opportunity to make a difference.
  21. The best advice I ever got was… “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” From Brené Brown when I saw her speak at the TED conference, also from her book The Gifts of Imperfection.
