For Fall 2015, Christian Siriano chose the Congo as his inspiration source. He stuck with the flora and fauna of the region, which perhaps prevented things from going too far into Heart of Darkness territory. Siriano went quite literal—leaves as prints on gowns, animal prints—tigers, zebras and leopards, oh my! It was, dramatic, feminine and bold.
We chatted with the designer after his show about his inspiration, his embellished shoes and of course, the Oscars.
theFashionSpot: Can you talk to us a bit about the inspiration?
Christian Siriano: Yeah! Into the Congo. We went! It was inspired by all different parts. Animals, creatures, plants, African tulip trees, the Heliconia plant—we wanted it to feel like the essence of that but still ladylike.
tFS: And were you inspired by actually going to Africa?
CS: I’ve never been. And so it was my idea of the fantasy of what it would be like if I was there in that place at the time.
tFS: To recover from Fashion Week, are you planning a trip, perhaps to Africa?
CS: I hope for summer, yes, I plan on taking an amazing safari in the summer. That’s the goal.
tFS: Will we see any of these dresses next week at the Oscars?
CS: Maybe! We’ll see!!
