We caught up with Johnny Schembri of By Johnny just a couple of hours ahead of his Spring 2015 showcase at MBFWA, where the designer explained his choices for the new collection, his secrets to success and the possibility of launching into menswear.
“I’ve sort of mixed up the way I’m putting together dresses,” Johnny explained of his function-meets-form range. “I’ve played around with like a lot of textures that you find in day-to-day life.”
Even though he’s shaking things up a little, he tells us he’s not quite ready to branch out into other areas like menswear just yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not on the cards. “I would do men’s. I think that’s down the track, though,” he tells us. “I feel like there’s still room to grow in women’s, and I’m not there yet. Once I feel like I’m ready and I feel I can open another basket, I will.”
As for all his success to date, Johnny modestly credits the kind people in his life. “It’s just about having a great team and support network behind you,” he says. “It’s just about getting the right people around you and making sure, you know, you’re working to the same goal.”
We think his eye for colour and construction helps, too.
