Serpent & the Swan Interview: “It’s Not Just About Fashion”

We caught up with sisters Hayley and Lauri Smith just a few days ahead of their MBFWA show, who tell us there’s so much more to Serpent & the Swan than just trends. “It’s not just about fashion,” says Hayley. “It’s more about a sensory experience.”

That’s exactly what they delivered with their haunting runway this week, looking to musician Sophia Brous to provide eerie background music for the showcase. It was the perfect complement to the range, dubbed Mineral Kingdom — Life on Earth. “It’s all about minerals, and fossils, and broken shells, and endoskeletons, and all this weird stuff we’re into,” laughs Lauri.

The sisters surprised guests with a little bit of colour this season, and the girls were a little nervous about veering away from their usual monochrome. It’s not hot pink or anything, though, so they’re still true to their collection’s inspiration with iridescent and subdued hues.
