theFashionSpot: What inspired you to create this collection?
Nicolette Mason: For the last couple of years, I've had an amazing working relationship with Addition Elle, so when they approached me about collaborating on a dress collection, I of course obliged! I've loved their collections with Ashley Graham and Nadia Aboulhosn and have been so excited by the creative direction and strong point of view within the brand. This capsule is part of their New Noir collection, which takes a bit of a romantic inspiration and a Parisian retro vibe. It is confident, flirty and all about feeling beautiful!
tFS: Tell us about your experience creating this collection.
NM: The design process was truly collaborative, working with Addition Elle's in-house team of design experts to create a capsule of dresses that would evoke different moods and fit a variety of different body shapes and sizes. It was really important to me to have a variety of silhouettes and have different types of people in mind while creating each dress. We also focused a lot on practicality and thought of real-life situations where each dress could be worn. Because I have a background as an editor, having been a contributing editor at Marie Claire magazine for the last 4.5 years, thinking of problem-solving solutions to getting dressed is a big part of my creative process!
tFS: What made you focus on dresses?
NM: Without question, I am a skirts-and-dresses girl, year round! I love to wear a great statement frock and dresses are almost always the foundation for my favorite outfits. I love the versatility of dresses and how they can easily be dressed up or down and from day to night.
tFS: Plus-size shoppers often complain about the lack of fashion-forward options available to them. How important was it for you to embrace trends with this collection?
NM: I love trends and I love to experiment with trends, but this capsule isn't necessarily trend driven. We worked with a classic palette and classic silhouettes that we infused with updates; the off-the-shoulder dress is a quintessential fit and flare, but has the edge of sheer peekaboo panels and the cut-out shoulder detail. I love finding ways to reimagine classic styles — and I think there's a lot of that in this capsule!
tFS: Any future plans for another collaboration?
NM: Right now, I am really focused on this capsule and seeing it out into the world, but never say never!
