Vetements Teams Up With Tommy Hilfiger to Make $100 Socks, Among Other Things

In 2016 alone, Zurich-based streetwear brand Vetements teamed up with no less than 19 different labels — brands as disparate as Juicy Couture, Mackintosh (not to be confused with Apple), Brioni, Champion, Doc Martens and Comme des Garçons — and it seems the collab-happy brand has no intention of winding down. WWD reports that Vetements’ latest collaborator is none other than famed American designer Tommy Hilfiger (he of the water-adjacent fashion week blowouts). The pair’s unisex capsule collection will hit stores this February.

Apparently, Vetements CEO Guram Gvasalia first met with Hilfiger “six to nine months ago” (it was all such a blur). Four or seven months later, but definitely two months ago, Gvasalia phoned Hilfiger and confirmed the deal.

“I was very excited. What they’ve done is quite genius. They have their own rule book. They do what they want and do it when and how they want,” Hilfiger gushed to WWD.

The collection will be available at Vetements’ usual distributors (Barneys New York, Colette, Harrods, etc.). It will consist of hoodies (oversized, of course), T-shirts, beanies and socks in gray, heather, navy, red and fuchsia. “It’s luxe streetwear. Nobody does it better than these guys,” said Hilfiger, who recently got back into the streetwear game with the revival of his 90s-era Tommy Jeans collection.

For the moment, the collection is a one-off, but Hilfiger is more than willing to revisit the line in the future. “The fact that a disruptive designer like Demna [Gvasalia] would want to do something with our brand is a tremendous compliment,” said the designer.

Naturally, since this is Vetements, the designs will not come cheap: an oversized raglan-sleeve hoodie will cost around $1,120, a double-sleeved hoodie closer to $1,000. The long-sleeved tees will cost about $720, the beanies $290. The most affordable item, a pair of socks, will go for around $100.

Regardless, the pieces are sure to sell out even faster than Tommy x Gigi, if such a thing were possible.
