Chanel Turned Its Spring 2019 Runway Into an Indoor Beach

To Karl Lagerfeld, the elevated floor and glaring lights of a runway are too basic for Chanel — but a floor full of sand and sea is just perfect.

Dubbed Chanel by the Sea, Chanel’s Spring 2019 show completely transformed the Grand Palais into a scenic view of a beach where models strode barefoot on the sand in luxurious beachwear that included straw hats, swimsuits and cardigans. The illusion was made to appear even more realistic with lifeguards and water sloshing around the models as they walked the beach-themed runway.

Several of the accessories featured included handbags and sandals, which were carried by hand. Lagerfeld made an appearance at the end of the show, walking on a bamboo bridge that leads to a nipa hut.

Past Chanel runways have included indoor waterfalls, a custom-built Eiffel Tower and a double C-branded spacecraft, to name just a few, but this one was sure to make waves. See all the Chanel Spring 2019 looks below.
