Giorgio Armani S/S 2011: Milan Fashion Week

Thanks to Lady Gaga’s outrageous red carpet looks, Giorgio Armani has made quite a comeback among the younger, trendier demographic. However, none of that over-the-top fashion was on display at the Spring 2011 collection (after all, his kookier looks are better suited for the red carpet at the Grammys). Instead, Armani showcased a more sophisticated collection, which, as the program noted, was “totally monotone.”

Armani opted for various shades of midnight blue that at times appeared almost black. The designer was inspired by the Tuareg tribesmen of Saharan North Africa, particularly by the indigo robes and veils worn by the nomads of the desert. The models walked on the runway as a video of shifting sands played in the background. What a jolt the collection was, in comparison to the colors that pervaded other Milanese runways.

Armani has always been the epitome of classic elegance, and his Spring 2011 collection was just that. The predominantly long silhouettes translated into both separates—including fitted jackets and lean trousers—as well as draped gowns.  These pieces tied into both the maxi trend and the voluminous pieces that swept through a number of major runways.

While the mood of the collection was subdued and serious, it was rich in detail and abundant in texture. Armani is, after-all, a couturier. This was clear in nearly every look the models wore. Jewel, crystal and sequin embellishments were prevalent everywhere, from the cuffs of jackets to handbags and tribal necklaces. This made for a parade of exquisitely detailed looks that shoppers will hold on to forever.
