Vivienne Westwood Fall 2011 Runway Review

Vivienne Westwood‘s collection was entitled World Wide Woman but given the designer’s penchant for designing without bounds, everything must be taken with a grain of salt. In spite of this, and almost lost somewhere between the crazy punk-warrior makeup and the outlandish accessories, there were actual wearable looks, a rarity from the designer.

This collection had something for every woman showing 50s dresses alongside body-con suits and tailored tweed and bringing a new meaning to statement dressing, the eco-warrior emblazoned “Trees Save Lives” on an intarsia knit. Beyond the overworked eveningwear and looks that have unexplained patches of snakeskin print, the daywear is where Westwood undeniably succeeded.

While the makeup look may be less common, the hair, a matted and twisted coif of plaits, has made appearances at a few other shows this month. This collection may not be on anyone’s must-have list but there are definitely pieces worth taking a second look and the beauty of being Vivienne Westwood is the freedom to do what you want.
