Forum Buzz: Vogue Paris’ Linda Evangelista-Inspired Cover; Giovanna Battaglia Wows in Sexy Vintage

Vogue Paris Flashes Back

Taking a cue from the late 80s and early 90s, the June/July 2011 cover of Vogue Paris features model Isabeli Fontana as Linda Evangelista’s doppelganger photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.

Opinions on the cover among forum members were mixed, but many agreed that as Mchunu pointed out, this month’s cover is “strikingly different from past Vogue Paris covers.”

Isabeli Fontana photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for the Vogue Paris June/July 2011 issue; Linda Evangelista photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia‘s February 1989 issue.

Several posters thought the cover looked more characteristic of Vogue Italia or Vogue Espagne in addition to feeling like it belonged on a magazine from another time and a different era. “Oh shoot! I thought it was Linda,” laughed cottonmouth13. “So Vogue Italia-Cuba-February-1989. But nevertheless, I think it looks amazing!”

Melly5525 wrote, “Totally different than what I expected but I absolutely love it, Isabeli looks amazing, every inch the supermodel.”

Miss Dalloway however, was a bit disappointed by this new take on an old editorial. “So strange how the [editorial] from all those years ago with Linda, actually looks way more modern, and engaging! I really can’t see why this was necessary. Vogue Paris used to set trends, not repeat them. So much for creativity, but Isabeli is a stunner.”

“I know some might not like this but I LOVE IT!” ForChicSake posted excitedly about Giovanna Battaglia’s look at the 2011 amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes. Wearing a skin-baring vintage 1992 Stephen Sprouse dress with Sergio Rossi shoes and clutch, and an Emilio Pucci blazer draped over her shoulders, Giovanna commanded attention.

“She is bringing sexy back,” declared isa.b.elle. Elly9 applauded the risqué look, saying “Wow… that’s courage,” and Wolkfolk called Giovanna “the most daredevil editor ever.”

It took a lot of guts to wear a dress where “the top half of it almost looks like it was painted on her body,” as Ciao!Manhattan described. But, if Fashion Spot forum member reactions are any indication, this was a fashion risk worth taking. Hats off to Giovanna Battaglia, who told style.com the dress was “a true art piece.”

Kirsten Dunst Can Act

Though there is controversy surrounding director Lars Von Trier’s remarks during the press conference in Cannes for Melancholia (will people stop with the Nazi-loving references already?!), Kirsten Dunst managed to snag the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance.

Forum members have been loving her style in Cannes this year; “style-wise it’s been one of the best runs Kirsten’s done in a while,” wrote littlepaperstars, but they’re even more excited that she was recognized for her acting talent.

“Wonderful news! Congrats to Kirsten – the belle of the ball in more ways than one!” exclaimed Not Plain Jane

MulletProof agreed, saying, “Absolutely. Her look could hardly get better for… dress + makeup + hair are beautiful but still a little quirky just like her style is. She was really in for a memorable day. And I’m glad that she won… she’s been in the business for all her life but hardly gets any recognition. I can’t wait for the amazing projects she’ll be landing after this.”

Fashion-wise, forum members wished that she had opted for lighter, more delicate shoes with the dress she accepted her award in, but as atooomic posted, “Everything else is looking just perfect, especially the makeup – stunning!” Just a tiny misstep, but I think we’re all looking forward to seeing more of Kirsten on the red carpet this year… especially if she keeps doing what she’s doing. She’s on a hot streak.
