The Glossies: June 2011 Best and Worst Covers

I’m endlessly fascinated by Alexa Chung who, like Rachel Bilson, has managed to maintain A-list celebrity status (at least in the fashion crowd) thanks almost exclusively to impeccable personal style. Chung’s show may have been short-lived and most people may not know career-wise what she’s up to, but that hasn’t curbed endorsement deals or the rubbing of shoulders with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld. This month, the Brit shows off her carefree attitude on the cover of Vogue UK — crossed arms, flyaway hairs and all. It’s impressive that the magazine let Chung stay true to her somewhat awkward demeanor and didn’t force a faux smile or sultry look upon her. Sticking with Chungs, Jamie Chung appeared on the cover of Prestige Indonesia. I have to admit that I sat through all of Hangover Part II thinking she was Tila Tequila and while she looks beautiful on this cover, she may have been better served opting for a smile over such an intense glare.

Surprisingly, one of the most natural-looking covers this month came courtesy of Vogue. The magazine featured a freckled Penelope Cruz looking effortlessly breathtaking. Also going for a beachy-natural look was Hamptons magazine with their season kick-off issue cover star Chelsea Handler. Handler is not the kind of woman you’d imagine being at ease when it comes to a glossy shoot, making the cover all the more impressive. On the other end, Rachel McAdams graced the cover of this month’s Elle and her pose seem quite a bit forced and her neck seems to have gone missing. That said she looks playful and fun and works the stacked bangles, fitted black trousers, and embellished jacket she was styled in well.

Going red seems to be a growing hair trend in Hollywood and one of the latest to opt for a strawberry mane is Lady Gaga for the cover of Rolling Stone. The cover has her looking a bit sci-fi, but it’s original enough and that’s rather impressive given the amount of covers the singer has been garnering these last few months.

Less successful was Florence Welch on the cover of Nylon’s Music Issue. Also sporting her trademark red mane, the 24-year-old singer’s look appears jumbled for the sake of looking jumbled. Similarly, blue was not a successful color this month. Isabeli Fontana looks possessed on the cover of Vogue Paris, while few covers look more Photoshopped than Maria Menounos on Self magazine. One can’t deny, however, that Menounos’ skin tone looks enviable against her Michael Kors ensemble.

One of the month’s most talked about covers may well have been Britney Spears for Harper’s Bazaar. Yes she looks great, hair extensions and all, but at this point we’re all more or less aware that she doesn’t actually look like this in person. That said, she’s styled to perfection on the cover and inside the magazine.
