Energy was high at Mark Fast's fall showing and it wasn't just because of the collection. When Kanye West strolled out from backstage, we knew that Mark Fast was taking a step further into the limelight. The collection, which the designer remarked was sophisticated grunge, was a much more wearable showing but still very Fast. Bulky cardigans and looser knits were both welcome and unexpected for the designer whose tight and revealing looks have garnered scorn for being unwearable. That's not to say the looks were forgiving, but more so than in seasons past. Design elements from past collections were present but reincarnated to suit the downtown edge of the theme and the softer textures worked well with the palette of grey, black, sandy beige, and blue. Fast’s celebrity fans will still be able to find a party dress in there somewhere but, for the first time, there are pieces that might just be worn by a normal, modern woman. The collection veered slightly off track at the end, with two beaded crochet piece coming out of nowhere, but overall this was a much more mature showing for the designer. Let’s hope Fast keeps heading in this direction and maybe he’ll break free of his one-note reputation.
